On May 27-28, 2026, IRCAD North America (IRCAD NA) hosted a pilot course, “Advanced Airway Challenges: Simulation-Based Training.” Led by co-directors Dr. Mark Bullard and Dr. Alan Heffner, this program used team-based scenarios to simulate real-life emergency situations and equip trainees to manage the airway in intensive environments.

Advanced models helped present unique airway challenges, such as a patient in a neck brace, a pregnant patient or an infant patient. Immersed in high-fidelity simulation scenarios, the trainees were further challenged to manage airways along with patient care. Each scenario concluded with a large group debriefing and discussion, to reflect on performance and what was learned.
